THE LAMP THAT BRIGHTENS DARKNESS
This book, the worth of which is beyond description, is a distended commentary on the last āyah of Sūrah at-Tawbah.
It is the definitive work on the Prophet’s, Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam, affectionate solicitude for his ummah in life and after death.
This, Misbāh az-Zalām (by Muhammad al-Muzālī al-Marrākushī) in Arabic, is a foundational manual for whoever realizes that there is no way to Allah, and thus to sanity on earth, but through obeisant attachment to His Prophet, Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam.
At the same time, the heart of its heart is the seventh chapter, where the centrality of Abū Bakr and ‘Umar to the matter of his, Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam, excellence in all fields of human endeavour is the living proof that such greatness triumphantly overflowed into our realm of ordinary mortals.
I say of it in my respect what the author mentioned about it in his own connection in the prefatory chapter thereof, hoping it will be a proof in my favour and in favour of every satisfied reader thereof:
I have made it the intercessor on my behalf, and my intermediary to Allah on the day when I shall stand before Him, since he [Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam] is the intercessor of the nations, whom the believers on the Promised Day have been given the glad tidings of, the one exclusively singled out for the Praiseworthy Station on the well attested Day, the intercessor of mankind before they are summoned to the Decree, their rescuer after being exposed to the pouncing attack of overwhelming Divine authority, on the Day when every self will come forward arguing on his own behalf, when every pregnant one will deliver what is carried in her womb, and the one who has been forgiven his earlier errors and his later ones (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa-Sallam) will say: “I am standing for her.”
